Facelift in Richmond, VA
Facelifts are considered the “keystone” procedure for rejuvenating the lower portion of the face. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers facelifts for men and women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.
What is a Facelift?
Aging, sun damage and heredity all influence how you will age. Men and women may develop sagging skin, lines, wrinkles, creases, lax ligaments and volume loss. The degree of change, as well as the location of the changes, are all unique to each patient.
*Benefits of a Facelift
Facelifts are the best method for addressing more advanced signs of aging that cannot be treated with our MedSpa treatments. Your surgeon develops a surgical plan to:
- Reduce lines and wrinkles by tightening the skin
- Remove and/or reposition fat to enhance contours
- Tighten underlying muscles and ligaments
You may need a full facelift if you have signs of aging over your entire face or a mini facelift if you only have signs of aging in the lower third of your face.
Who is the Ideal Candidate for a Facelift?
Sagging of the face and neck are usually the first indications that you may be a good candidate for a facelift. The best results are achieved in patients who have good skin elasticity and well-defined bone structure. This typically applies to men and women around 40 to 60 years old, but facelifts can be performed on older patients as well. The goal of a facelift is to help you look younger, yet still natural and age-appropriate. As such, your surgeon will help you have realistic expectations of the procedure.
What Do I Need to Do Before Having a Facelift?
Facelifts need to be tailored to the individual patient. During your consultation, our board-certified plastic surgeon will evaluate your skin and anatomy to determine the best approach for your surgery. We will also review your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery in general. After your consultation, you will feel well informed and confident about having a facelift at Richmond Plastic Surgeons.
What Should I Expect on The Day of My Facelift?
Local anesthesia and sedatives are used for most facelifts, although some patients benefit from general anesthesia. Incisions are made above the hairline in the temple region and follow the hairline to the point in front of the ears. The incision continues around to the back of the ears. If your surgeon is addressing problems in the neck area, an incision is also made under the chin.
The skin is separated from the muscle and fat. Excess fat is either trimmed or removed via liposuction. The muscles may be tightened with sutures. The skin is then draped across the face, pulled tight and sutured in place. Any excess skin is removed.
How Long Does It Take to Perform a Facelift?
*A full facelift can take several hours or longer. The longer surgeries entail a greater extent of correction or a combination of procedures, such as a facelift and eyelid surgery.
What to Expect After a Facelift
Patients typically experience little to no discomfort after a facelift. If you do experience discomfort, we will prescribe a pain medication.*Your skin will feel numb for a few weeks or months until you are fully healed. *You will need to keep your head elevated for about two days to help minimize the swelling. *Bandages are removed after one to five days. *Your appearance will be puffy, bruised and pale. *These symptoms subside after a few weeks.
*You will need to rest for the first one to two days, and limit yourself to light activities for the first week. Your skin will be numb and sensitive, so take great care when washing or touching your face. *Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least two weeks.
Will I Have Scars After Getting a Facelift?
*Incisions along the hairline and scalp take longer to heal. You may notice pink scars developing during this time. The scars will change to a tan or brown color. Fading takes about one year, but the scars do not disappear completely. Fortunately, few if any people will be able to see your scars unless they closely inspect the hairlines.
When Will I See the Results?
*For the first few weeks, your face will be swollen, so your results will improve with time. After the swelling subsides, you begin to see the exceptional results of your facelift.
What Are Possible Complications of a Facelift?
Complications are rare when you receive a facelift from one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. Your risk is also based upon your individual anatomy and healing process. You may develop blood under your skin (similar to a bruise), nerve injuries and infection. Smokers may experience longer healing times than non-smokers.
How Long Will the Results of a Facelift Last?
*A facelift will take years off your appearance, but it cannot stop the aging process. The benefits, though, will last for many years.
How Much Does a Facelift Cost in Richmond?
Medical insurance does not cover the cost of facelift surgery. After your consultation, we provide a cost and explain our payment options. Financing is available through CareCredit®.
