Breast Lift (Mastopexy) in Richmond, VA

A woman’s breasts are closely associated with her femininity, and any changes to the breasts have a significant impact on her self-confidence. Pregnancy and aging cause the breasts to sag, and women no longer feel as attractive and comfortable with their bodies. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers breast lifts for women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.

What is a Breast Lift?

Sagging and drooping breasts typically occur when the ligaments and skin stretch. This may be caused by pregnancy, aging and weight loss, but some women have naturally low-hanging breasts. *A breast lift addresses the droopy appearance of the breasts. *While the surgery does not directly change the shape or size, improving the breast position can make them look fuller.

*Benefits of Mastopexy

A breast lift, or mastopexy, corrects common problems that make your breasts sag or appear to point downward. Our plastic surgeons recommend breast lift surgery to:

  • Reshape the breasts by tightening the skin and underlying soft tissue
  • Lifting the breasts so that the nipples no longer point downward
  • Correcting areola that may have been stretched

Who is the Ideal Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Breast procedures are recommended for women who are near their ideal weight, in good health and not planning to get pregnant, as these factors can affect your breasts as well as the safety of the surgery. Specific characteristics of the breasts that can be corrected with a breast lift are:

  • Having one breast that hangs lower than the other
  • Pendulous, elongated or sagging breasts
  • Areolas and nipples that point downward
  • Nipples that fall below the natural breast crease when you are not wearing a bra
  • Areolas are elongated
  • Stretched skin
  • Breasts that have lost shape and volume

Some women benefit from a breast lift with implants to lift the breasts and change the shape and size of the breasts.

What Do I Need to Do Before Having Mastopexy?

Breast lift surgery offers an option for women who have sagging breasts, and the best outcomes are achieved when women seek the expertise and surgical skill of a qualified plastic surgeon. You should feel confident in your surgeon’s experience with the surgery as well as the way in which the surgeon approaches your case and engages with you during the process. The best way to begin a positive experience during your breast lift surgery is to meet with one of our plastic surgeons for your consultation. You can learn more about the procedure as well as begin a lifelong relationship with your surgeon.

What Should I Expect on The Day of My Breast Lift?

Mastopexy is performed using several techniques. Your plastic surgeon determines the best technique for you based on:

  • Type of correction needed
  • Severity of breast sagging
  • Involvement of the areola and nipple in the surgery
  • Elasticity of the skin on the breast

These factors also influence whether you will need to be fully sedated with general anesthesia or only partially sedated. Once the anesthesia takes effect, the surgeon makes incisions to access the breast tissues. The incisions may be made:

  • In a lollipop shape that goes around the areola and downward to the breast crease
  • Only around the areola
  • In a modified lollipop shape that also requires an incision along the breast crease

Based on your anatomy, the surgeon may:

  • Reshape the breast tissue
  • Reduce and reshape the areolas
  • Reposition the nipples

The final step for your breast lift is to remove excess skin and close the incisions.

If you have a breast lift with implants, your plastic surgeon positions the implants prior to closing the incisions.

How Long Does It Take to Perform Mastopexy?

*Mastopexy takes one to three hours. If you are having breast implants in conjunction with your breast lift, the surgery will take longer.

What to Expect After a Breast Lift

You will wear a special compression bra after the surgery. The bra holds the tissues in place and promotes proper healing. Discomfort, bruising and tenderness are normal symptoms after a breast lift. We schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. You will need to limit your activities for several weeks after the surgery.

Will I Have Scars After Getting Mastopexy?

*You will have scarring after your breast lift. Scars around the areola blend the best with your skin. The vertical scar from the areola to the breast crease is visible, but not obvious while the scar in the breast crease is difficult to see. Scars first develop with a pink color and then fade over one year, but will never completely disappear.

When Will I See the Results?

*You will see an immediate improvement in your breast shape and position after the surgery, but you will have some swelling. Final results can be seen after three to six months.

What Are Possible Complications of a Breast Lift?

As with any surgery, mastopexy does carry some risks and possible complications. You can minimize your chances of developing post-surgical problems by entrusting your care to a qualified plastic surgeon. Some of the problems that may result from breast lift surgery are:

  • Complications due to the anesthesia
  • Bleeding and infection
  • Changes to nipple sensation which may be long-term or short-term
  • Loss of fat tissue in the breast due to necrosis
  • Irregularities in the shape and size of the breast, nipple, and areola

How Long Will the Results of Mastopexy Last?

*The results of your breast lift are long-lasting as long as you maintain your weight. Pregnancy and aging can change the way your breasts look, so you may need revision surgery at some point. Your plastic surgeon will explain your individual risk for needing future surgeries.
