What is Breast Implant Removal?

With breast augmentation, women can enhance their breasts in a relatively short period of time. This immediate boost in self-confidence and body image changes a woman’s outlook for many years. Sometimes, though, life stages change a woman’s priorities or her perspective of how she should look. This is where breast implant removal, also known as breast implant revision, comes into play. The procedure is performed when a woman wants to completely remove her implants or replace them with a different shape or size. Breast implant removal and revision is also performed when the implant ruptures or migrates out of position.

Benefits of Breast Implant Removal

Women consider breast implant removal for several reasons. The most common reasons that woman want to remove or replace their implants are to:

  • Change the size of the implant, either smaller or larger
  • Create a better balance between their appearance and how they feel about themselves
  • Change the type of implant, such as from silicone to saline or from rounded to teardrop
  • Remove implants and restore the natural breasts

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Breast Implant Removal?

The ideal candidate for breast implant removal or replacement is a woman who is no longer happy with her original breast augmentation. You may also need to consider breast implant revision or removal if your current implants have ruptured or moved out of place.

What Do I Need to Do Before Having Breast Implant Removal?

Having breast implants can cause some unwanted side effects and complications. The procedure to remove and/or replace your implants should address any concerns that are found before or during the surgery. For this reason, you should only work with a qualified plastic surgeon who is experienced in breast implant removal and replacement. Our surgeons specialize in the procedure, so you will not only feel confident that you will like the results, but you will also know that any issues related to your breast implants will be properly addressed.

What Should I Expect on The Day of My Breast Implant Removal?

Whenever possible, our plastic surgeons use the same incision sites that were used for your original breast augmentation. In some cases, though, new incisions must be used to properly remove/replace the implants and address any issues caused by your implants. Once the incisions are made, the implant is carefully extracted from the breast. Your surgeon examines the soft tissue to locate any problems caused by the implant, such as scar tissue or leakage of a silicone implant. If a new implant is to be used, it is inserted through the same incision. When your surgeon is satisfied with the results of the procedure, the incisions are sutured closed, and your breasts are wrapped with a compression garment to hold the tissues in place.

How Long Does It Take to Perform Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal may take one to three hours depending on the complexity of the procedure.

What to Expect After Breast Implant Removal

You will have bruising, tenderness, swelling and mild to moderate discomfort after your breast implant removal. *The symptoms should only last about a week, but the swelling may take several weeks or months to completely subside. Healing from your breast implant removal procedure is similar to your original breast augmentation. You will need to limit your activities as instructed by your surgeon.

Will I Have Scars After Getting Breast Implant Removal?

Whenever possible, we use the same incision sites as your breast augmentation. *Our surgeons are experienced with this technique, so the resultant scars are not significantly different from the scars you have now. In some cases, we do need to use different incision sites, and we take every measure possible to minimize the scarring.

When Will I See the Results?

*You will see the results of your breast implant removal/revision in the recovery room. You may be a bit tired, though, so you might not realize the results until the next day. After a few weeks, the swelling will subside, and you will get a better perspective of the results.

What Are Possible Complications of Breast Implant Removal?

The complications and risks of breast implant removal and revision surgery are the same as breast augmentation.

  • Infections
  • Improper healing
  • Scarring
  • Rupture or rippling of the implant (revision surgery)
  • Sagging of the breasts
  • Improper nipple positioning

The best way to minimize your risk for these unwanted outcomes is to work only with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon.

How Long Will the Results of Breast Implant Removal Last?

*The results of breast implant removal are long lasting. If you are having your implants replaced, you may need to have another revision surgery to replace the implants. Breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime and may need to be replaced after 10 to 20 years.
