Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) in Richmond, VA

Enhancing your eyes with plastic surgery may not require a facelift. *Blepharoplasty reduces the fat and excess skin that causes your upper and lower eyelids to droop and look puffy. Richmond Plastic Surgeons offers eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) for men and women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.

What is a Blepharoplasty?

As we get older, many aspects of our appearance change, but few people consider the effects of changes to the eyelids. Loose skin, excess fat and even swelling around the eyes make you look angry, tired or aged. *At Richmond Plastic Surgeons, we offer eyelid lifts to correct these problems and give you a more rested, youthful appearance.

*Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty offers benefits to men and women.

  • Outpatient procedure performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids
  • Requires only small incisions
  • Instantly takes years off your appearance
  • Reduces eye fatigue caused by the excess weight of the upper eyelids
  • Can be combined with a brow lift  or facelift to rejuvenate the entire face

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

As with any surgery, you should be in good health before considering an eyelid lift. Your surgeon will determine if you are able to undergo the procedure. Most patients who undergo blepharoplasty are at least 35 years old, as this is the time in life when the eyelids begin to show signs of aging. Younger patients may need the surgery if they have a family history of baggy or sagging eyelids.

Patients with certain medical conditions should not have blepharoplasty, such as:

  • Graves’ disease
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Insufficient tears or dry eyes
  • High blood pressure
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma or detached retina

What Do I Need to Do Before Having Eyelid Surgery?

Meeting with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons is an important first step. The surgeon will review your medical history and discuss any conditions you have, including current medications. Your tear production and vision will also be evaluated. If you meet the medical requirements of an eyelid lift, your surgeon explains the procedure, including the anticipated outcomes.

What Should I Expect on The Day of My Blepharoplasty?

We perform eyelid surgery at our facility on an outpatient basis. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made in the natural crease of your eyelid. For the lower eyelid, the incision is made along the lash line. Once the incision is made, your surgeon carefully removes excess fat and skin from the eyelids. The skin is pulled over the incision, and any excess is trimmed before the incisions are closed with sutures.

How Long Does It Take to Perform Eyelid Surgery?

*Blepharoplasty takes one to one to two hours.

What to Expect After Blepharoplasty

An ointment is applied to your eyes to help keep them moist and prevent infection, and your eyes may be covered with a bandage. As the anesthesia wears off, you will notice that your eyelids feel sore and tight. We will provide medications to help with any discomfort.

*You will need to keep your head elevated for several days and apply cold compresses to help with bruising and swelling. You may have some gummy discharge, and we will provide instructions on how to properly care for your eyes. Eye drops may help with any dryness. Common symptoms after blepharoplasty are:

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurring, double vision and other changes to vision
  • Excessive tearing

*After two or three days, your eyes will feel comfortable enough to read and watch television. *You should avoid wearing your contact lenses for two weeks. *In seven to 10 days, you will feel better and can resume normal light activities. Strenuous activities should be avoided for three weeks.

Will I Have Scars After Getting Eyelid Surgery?

The scars resulting from eyelid lift surgery are not noticeable.

When Will I See the Results?

*You can start to see results once the swelling goes down which can take a few weeks.

What Are Possible Complications of Blepharoplasty?

Having your eyelid surgery performed by a qualified plastic surgeon reduces the likelihood of developing complications, which may include:

  • Infection
  • Poor healing of the incision line
  • Asymmetry
  • Inability to close the eyes completely
  • Downward pulling on the lower eyelid

How Long Will the Results of Eyelid Surgery Last?

*The results of our eyelid lifts are long-lasting.
